Prison Ministry – Hope Where It Is Needed Most

Walter, a retired army officer, discovered a new calling after leaving military service. Deeply moved by the conditions and struggles faced by inmates in Gulu prisons, he recognised a profound need for hope, healing, and redemption.

Partnering with Encourage Ministries, Walter—together with Pastor Edwin Onen—began regular outreach to men’s and women’s prisons, as well as children’s remand homes. Through weekly visits, they share the Gospel, lead Bible studies, and offer pastoral care to those who often feel forgotten by society.

Walter’s background in the military brings structure, discipline, and leadership to the ministry. He guides inmates through conversations about forgiveness, repentance, and new beginnings, emphasising that no life is beyond God’s grace.

With support from Encourage Ministries, the prison outreach provides:

  • Bibles and Christian literature

  • Basic hygiene supplies such as soap and hair clippers

  • Food items including sugar

  • Medical support and essential medicines

These practical gifts, combined with consistent spiritual care, have led to visible changes in attitude, behaviour, and outlook among inmates. Many have embraced faith in Christ and expressed a desire to rebuild their lives through education and vocational training upon release.

Walter’s commitment has inspired others to join the outreach, expanding the ministry’s reach. He has also become a key link connecting Encourage Ministries to additional prisons across Uganda, helping extend the Gospel into even more places of need.

This prison ministry stands as a powerful reminder that God’s light shines even in the darkest places, and that compassion, partnership, and faith can truly transform lives.
